In 2010, the New York Academy of Sciences launched the Life Sciences Angel Network (LSAN) and, while the Academy carries on as a Founding Partner, LSAN became an independent organization as of January 2012. LSAN is designed to serve New York City and tri-state area scientists and entrepreneurs looking to fund and promote innovation. The network aims to fill the gap between New York and tri-state area technology transfer offices, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. It expects to provide capital through individual member contributions and sponsorships from organizations. The group is supported by Mayor Michael Bloomberg; Seth Pinsky, President of the New York City Economic Development Corporation; and various founding venture capital firm sponsors and partners. The group plans for an average size of direct investment ranges between $350K to $1.5MM. Focus areas include medical devices, diagnostics, and digital healthcare, and investments are stage and geography agnostic.
