    Description:

The Maine Technology Institute (MTI) is a state-funded nonprofit that offers early-stage capital and commercialization assistance for the research and development of innovative technology-based projects that create new products, processes and services generating high-quality jobs across Maine. MTI focuses on the following targeted sectors: Advanced Technologies for forestry & Agriculture; Aquaculture and Marine Technology; Biotechnology; Composite Materials Technology; Environmental Technology; Information Technology and Precision Manufacturing Technology. Since 2000, MTI has funded 1,295 technology projects in Maine, a financial commitment of $106 million that has leveraged over $173 million in additional funding for a total of $280 million. In the 2011 fiscal year, MTI funded 127 projects totaling $14.1 million. Among many initiatives, MTI Seed Grants of up to $25,000 are offered three times a year to support early-stage research and development activities for new products and services that lead to the market. MTI also makes equity investments, particularly in order to bridge the 'gap' between start-up and commercialization. Also offered in MTI's Business Innovation Program is the Tech Start Grant for up to $5,000 and the Business Accelerator Grant for activities that will increase a company's chance of success through business planning and financial management.
