Founded in 1970, Charles River Ventures (CRV) is one of the oldest venture capital firms in the U.S. The firm focuses on early-stage investments, consistently serving as the first investor in portfolio companies. The partners will consider companies at the earliest stages in areas such as Communications & Technology (Broadband, wireless and enabling chip technologies); Enterprise Software & Services (Opportunities enabled by the Open Source movement); and Media & Entertainment (New products & services enabled by the pervasive digital infrastructure). Historically, more than half of CRV's investments have been to companies with 0-9 employees. The partners don't require a complete management team (in order to consider investing), since CRV often helps in building one. CRV's initial investment can be as small as $25,000, or as large as $5 million, and expects to invest between $3 and $20 million over the lifetime of a project.
