Innovation Works (IW) has played a vital role in Southwestern PA's technology economy, investing capital, business expertise, and other resources into high-potential companies with the greatest likelihood for regional economic impact. IW is the single largest investor in seed-stage companies in the region. The fund also provides resources for manufacturers to adopt new technologies. IW is part of the Ben Franklin Technology Partners (see profile), a statewide network that fosters innovation to stimulate Pennsylvania's economic growth and prosperity. Innovation Works has invested $122 million in 731 technology startups. IW's Seed Fund targets start-up companies that are American-owned; located or willing to relocate to the Southwestern Pennsylvania region; employ fewer than 50 people; and are developing proprietary technology in the areas of Life Sciences and Information Technology. In 2007, Innovation Works launched AlphaLab (see profile), an immersive environment where entrepreneurs can tap IW's onsite experts for business and market advice and exchange ideas with other entrepreneurs launching in similar markets. Companies selected to participate in AlphaLab's intensive 20-week program receive: $25,000 in seed-stage funding, Mentorship, Educational Sessions, and Office Space.
