Third Security, LLC is an independent, private investment and advisory firm formed in 1999 to manage investments in public and private companies. Currently, the firm has more than 50 employees. Third Security's family of funds includes private equity, hedge funds, public equity and fixed income funds. The firm's private equity funds focus on emerging technology companies in life-sciences and information technology, and late-stage investments in health-care and financial services. NRM V, which closed in 2007 at $250 million, has invested and will continue to invest, in select public and private companies. The company launched NRM VI in 2009. Also managed by Third Security is NewVa Capital Partners (see profile), a private equity/venture capital enterprise formed in order to fund companies willing to begin operations in, or relocate to, the Roanoke Valley, the New River Valley or the Alleghany Highlands of Southwestern Virginia. The founding partners are Carilion Clinic, the Virginia Tech Foundation, and an affiliate of Third Security. The firm has been providing capital access, strategic assistance and business development for 20 years.
