    Description:

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) is a quasi-public agency of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, created by the Massachusetts legislature in June 2006. The MLSC was established to promote the life sciences within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is tasked with investing in life sciences research and economic development. This work includes making financial investments in public and private institutions growing life sciences research, development and commercialization, as well as building ties between sectors of the Massachusetts life sciences community. Funding initiatives include Massachusetts Life Science Fellowship Grants (Gap Funding) to promote new cures and retain researchers in Massachusetts; NIH gap funding grants to bridge researchers prior to receipt of NIH grant; Stem Cell research funding to overcome federal prohibitions and leverage Massachusetts' existing global strength in stem cell research; and RNAi funding to build upon the promising work of UMass Nobel laureate, Dr. Craig Mello. Through another initiative, the Life Sciences Accelerator Program, the MLSC will provide loans to companies engaged in life sciences research and development, commercialization and manufacturing in Massachusetts.
